Housing and Feeding
Your immediate ferret needs.

Housing – A rabbit hutch and small adjoining run is sufficient for a single ferret. However the more space and toys that can be offered the happier the ferret and ecpecially in a young ferret this tends to make them calmer and less excitable when brought out to play. A ferret who is cooped up will be less inclined to want to be held and cuddled.

Please note these critters are excellent diggers and climbers.
Feeding – I personally recommend James Wellbeloved complete dry ferret food. Most large pet superstores stock this brand and I will not feed my own pets on anything else. I soak the pellets in warm water until they become moist and soft allowing kits to be weaned from mum.
Small pieces of cooked meats can be offered as treats. Sliced ham, chicken and turkey seem to be particular favorites.
Do not feed milk and foods rich in sugars and carbohydrates (pasta, rice, bread) because ferrets have great difficulty digesting these foods.
Ferrets have a quick metabolism and a short digestive system, so need to eat frequently (usually every 3-4 hours).
The preferred method for feeding is to have food available constantly. Most ferrets will eat only enough to meet their caloric needs, and will not become obese if allowed constant access to food.
The pens you see featured above are a work in progress. Our idea is for all four ferrets to have complete run of area then turned into individual pens in summer when Star is separated from females – the third to be used when raising and weaning kitts. We also want to create different levels for ferrets to run up and explore. Such space for four ferrets is an indication of how spoilt and adored they are. We could not have created such a luxury home for them indoors.
